Autism was once believed to be caused by bad parenting or otherwise known as the refrigerator mother. There is no truth in this of course and was just used by specialists who at the time never understood Autism or any of it's related disorders..

The most common to be known is Aspergers Syndrome. The most recent studies show that the only difference between Autistic and Aspergers is the level of IQ, only. All Autistic's are different despite the myth they are all the same. They may show or share traits but they are their own individual person. Some traits to be common but not in all,are hypersensitive.

Some are hypersensitive to high pitch sounds to colours. Our daughter Chloe hates the sound of handryers and is sensitive to dog whistles which are so high pitched they can't be heard by people. Chloe has an ability to let you know in advance when a lightbulb in the house is about to blow. Other Autistic people seem not to like bright colours or certain types of music. Other people with Autism love classical music whilst there are some who love rock or heavy metal.

Not all Autistic people think in pictures. There are those such as Temple Grandin who have to picture things they are going to say. It can also cause problems known as literal thinking,we have sayings such as "I could have died laughing",for the visual thinker they would picture that thought visually and could become stressed as they mentally imagine you laughing and then dropping dead.

Autistics can't talk! Really
it is a common belief that people with Autism can't talk. Well rubbish as
most can it is believed only a small minority don't talk, known as severe
autistics.
Actually it's only about 10-12% who are savant. Such as Rainman who are able
to tell you what day the 10th of August was 20yrs ago, and what it will be
in 20 years time. The Savants usually tend to be good with figures/numbers.
Some Aspergers(not all )have a tendency to be good with computers or good
at Art. Finally Autistics cant have families, again this is untrue it's now
believed most people with autism do want relationships and families, some
just want to marry and not have kids some do. Autistics can show affection...

The above examples of what people with Autism can and can't do are in most cases just Myths as only a small minority fit the description you read about in books and to some degree these books need to be changed. I have lost count how much I have read and disagreed with. I actually agree with one Author who is very updated and has modern theories about different types of Autism. Also gives good insight to having autism is Dr Temple Grandin. I also think that Dr Tony Attwood gives an easy to follow theory and great insight from referral to diagnosis all the books I have read by Tony Attwood have been easy to follow and are a great starting point from learning about Autism and Aspergers Syndrome .
